Cognato is a Swedish alcohol-free wine brand founded in 2018 by cousins David Sommestad and Adam Malmnäs, who set out to make dealcoholised wines they would genuinely want to drink themselves.

The brand name means "closely related to", reflecting Cognato's dual identity: the company is based in Sweden, where its first wines launched in 2019, while its production partners and all grape sources are in South Africa. Sommestad and Malmnäs founded the brand to fill what they saw as a gap for wine suited to occasions where people are fully present, whether dining or managing the everyday demands of parenting.

The wines are made from sustainably grown grapes from South Africa's Coastal Region, harvested at full maturity and put through maceration before dealcoholisation. Cognato uses a gentle vacuum spinning cone process, meaning the wine is produced at full strength and the alcohol then extracted under low temperature and pressure to preserve the grape's natural fruit character.

The range covers red, white, rosé and sparkling styles. Cognato sits in the premium segment and is available through multiple retail channels.
