Giesen
Giesen is a New Zealand wine brand founded in 1981 by brothers Theo, Alex, and Marcel Giesen near Christchurch, producing a broad 0% alcohol-free wine range launched in early 2020.
The founding brothers purchased land and planted a vineyard just outside Christchurch in 1981, then relocated the winery's main operations to Marlborough in the early 1990s after recognising the region's potential. Giesen remains family-owned and independently operated by the three founding brothers. The Marlborough provenance has since become central to the brand's identity, particularly for its Sauvignon Blanc.
In early 2020, Giesen launched what it claims is the world's first alcohol-free Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc, marking its entry into the 0% wine category. To manage the process in-house, the brand invested more than $1 million in its own spinning cone column dealcoholisation unit, a low-temperature method that gently separates alcohol from fully fermented wine while preserving varietal aromas. That in-house investment sets Giesen apart from wineries that outsource this step. The brand entered the segment specifically to offer sober-curious drinkers a premium dealcoholised option with genuine varietal identity rather than a generic grape-juice profile.
The 0% range now spans several varietal styles, covering both still and sparkling formats, and has expanded significantly since its initial launch. Giesen 0% is available across major retail markets including the US, Australia, and New Zealand, with the range also stocked through specialist alcohol-free retailers internationally.
