Nittenauer

The brewery has been family-owned for generations and has been led since 2013 by Sebastian Jakob. Located in the Upper Palatinate region of Bavaria, Nittenauer's roots in 1762 make it one of the longer-established family breweries in the area still actively developing its AF programme.

The alcohol-free range is built around a specialised yeast strain that cannot process maltose, the main fermentable sugar in beer. Because the yeast cannot convert maltose into alcohol, fermentation produces minimal alcohol from the outset rather than requiring it to be removed afterwards. This is different from dealcoholisation, where beer is brewed to full strength and then has the alcohol extracted. The result is a beer that retains body and flavour character through the fermentation process rather than after it.

The range covers six styles, spanning IPAs, wheat beers, lagers, and a coffee porter produced in collaboration with a local Bavarian roastery. That collaboration grounds one style firmly in the brewery's regional community. The IPA was the first dedicated AF release from Nittenauer, establishing its entry into craft AF formats before the range expanded.

Distribution outside Bavaria runs through specialist alcohol-free retailers, making the range accessible to sober-curious drinkers internationally. The premium pricing reflects both the import origin and the production approach. For a brewery with over 260 years of history, the decision to develop six distinct AF styles signals a genuine long-term commitment to the category rather than a token addition to the catalogue.
