Hell Lager
An alcohol-free Hell lager from Rosenheim's oldest private brewery, brewed with Hallertau hops and alpine water to a classic Bavarian pale lager style.
About This Drink
Flötzinger is the oldest brewery in Rosenheim and has been brewing since 1543. Their alcohol-free Hell is an attempt to bring the traditional Bavarian Hell lager style into the 0.5% bracket, using locally sourced barley and aromatic hops from the Hallertau region, along with pure alpine water. A Hell lager should be pale, clean and slightly malty — this one broadly delivers on that. The nose carries lively yeast character, slightly sweet malt and a light lemon note. On the palate it's more malt-forward than hop-forward, which is true to style: soft grain sweetness with a gentle grassy finish and none of the sharpness that can undermine weaker beers. The alcohol removal is done carefully enough that the typical wheat beer taste is preserved, making it a good-faith attempt at the style rather than a pale substitute. For fans of German lager who want something from an authentic regional brewery rather than one of the big industrials, Flötzinger's Hell is worth trying. It's also vegan-friendly.
