M&S has put together a set of distilled alcohol-free botanicals that sit alongside their gin range in purpose — something to pour over ice or into a spritz when you want a bit of sophistication in a glass. The Strawberry & Basil edition is the most summery of the trio, leading with ripe fruit and fresh herb before the more traditional botanical notes come in underneath. The distillation process means the botanicals — juniper, pink peppercorns, coriander, cinnamon, lavender, a touch of chilli — are properly integrated rather than just sitting on top of a sweetened base. Glycerol is used in the recipe, which adds a slight viscosity and a silky mouthfeel that many alcohol-free spirits use as a structural tool. The sugar content is notably low at 0.1g per 100ml. Serve over ice with tonic or soda; it also works in a spritz with alcohol-free fizz. Vegan-friendly. At 37 kcal per 100ml it's a moderate calorie option for an AF botanical.
