About This Drink
Astoria is a well-established winery based in Refrontolo, in the Treviso hills of the Veneto. ZEROTONDO Sparkling is their alcohol-free offering — and it takes a distinctly Italian approach to the format. Rather than trying to dealcoholise an existing wine, the process starts by preventing fermentation altogether: the grape must is held in refrigerated tanks immediately after pressing, keeping the natural sugars intact and the alcohol at zero. Carbonation is added before bottling to produce the fizz. The result is closer to a premium sparkling grape juice than a traditional spumante, and it's worth being clear about that upfront. It's sweet — noticeably so, with 12.9g of sugar per 100ml — with ripe pear, green apple, and white flower notes that sit front and centre. There's enough acidity to keep it from being flat on the palate, and the fine perlage gives it a pleasant lightness. At 67 kcal per 100ml, it's not low-calorie, but it is organic, with a simple ingredients list dominated by the grape juice itself. It works well poured at a celebration where something fizzy and Italian is the brief — served well chilled from a flute, it looks the part and has enough character to feel like a considered choice. If you're after something drier or more wine-like in complexity, this isn't it. But as a sweet, clean, organically certified sparkling drink from a proper Italian producer, it does exactly what it sets out to do.
