Geralt's Gold
A hoppy Helles lager brewed in collaboration with Netflix for The Witcher. Peach and citrus aromatics over a malt-sweet base, with Warrior, Chinook, Centennial, and Simcoe hops providing a dry, spicy finish.
About This Drink
Geralt's Gold is Athletic Brewing's tie-in with Netflix's The Witcher, and the beer style they chose fits the brief surprisingly well. A Helles is a Bavarian pale lager — traditionally malt-forward and clean — but the hoppy variant Athletic have gone with here shifts the balance towards the hop side, using an American four-hop combination rather than the Noble German hops you'd usually find in the style. Warrior, Chinook, Centennial, and Simcoe together give the beer a character that's more aromatic than a classic Helles. The nose is fruity and slightly unexpected: peach, watermelon, and floral hop character come through alongside the cereal grain base. On the palate it's medium-bodied with citrus up front, a light grain backbone, and a spiciness mid-palate from the hop combination. Not aggressively bitter, but present. The finish is dry and clean with moderate bitterness. At roughly 18 calories per 100ml it's light. Brewed with water, malted barley, hops, wheat, and yeast; vegan. Released as a limited edition, it has since sold out on the US site and is now occasionally available through secondary sources. A well-made lager that rewards attention without demanding it.
