About This Drink
Brauerei Gutmann in Titting, Bavaria, has been making Hefeweizen since 1707, and their alcohol-free version of the classic Hefe Weisse is a straight-down-the-line example of the style. No bells and whistles — just wheat malt, barley malt, hops and yeast, with carbon dioxide for conditioning. It pours hazy pale golden with a generous white foam head that holds well. The aroma is exactly what you want from a Bavarian wheat beer: ripe banana from the yeast, fresh bread, a hint of clove, and a soft floral hop note in the background. For an alcohol-free beer it carries that character convincingly. On the palate, the banana and wheat malt lead, with a light clove spice and gentle hop bitterness keeping things from going too sweet. The finish is clean and short. At 26 calories per 100ml and naturally isotonic, it's a solid choice after exercise or simply when you want something more interesting than fizzy water with a wheat beer feel. Widely available in Germany and stocked by specialist AF retailers in the UK.
