About This Drink
Merlot is a sensible grape choice for dealcoholisation. It's naturally lower in tannin than Cabernet Sauvignon, which means the process has less to strip out, and the variety's plum and blackberry fruit tends to survive reasonably intact. Eisberg's Signature Merlot is made by vacuum distillation, the gentler end of the dealcoholisation spectrum. The colour is deep ruby. On the nose you get dark berry fruit — plum and blackberry mostly — with a soft, slightly jammy character. The palate is light-bodied and smooth, with minimal astringency, and the finish is clean if short. It's not a wine that pretends to have the weight of an alcoholic red; the body is clearly lighter than a full-strength Merlot would be, and the acidity can sit a little higher without alcohol to balance it. At 23 calories per 100ml and 5g of sugar, it's a reasonable midweek option. It's widely available in supermarkets and typically one of the cheaper AF reds on the shelf. For the price and availability, it does what it says.
