An Italian dealcoholised amaro from the Lucano distillery in Basilicata, replicating the bittersweet herbal character of the alcoholic original using around 30 botanicals at under 0.5% ABV.
About This Drink
Amaro Lucano has been made in Pisticci, southern Italy, since 1894. This 0% version is dealcoholised rather than alcohol-free from the outset — Lucano make the standard amaro and then remove the alcohol, which tends to preserve more of the original botanical complexity than building a non-alcoholic version from scratch. The flavour profile lands in recognisably amaro territory: chamomile and orange zest on the nose, caramel and liquorice in the middle, rosemary and aniseed threading through the finish. It's bittersweet rather than aggressively bitter, which makes it accessible as a standalone aperitivo as well as a cocktail ingredient. The ingredient list includes elderberry, myrtle, and citrus among its herbal extracts. Works well over ice with a splash of soda, or as a substitute anywhere you'd use Averna or Montenegro in a mixed drink.
