König Ludwig
König Ludwig is a Bavarian beer brand from Upper Bavaria, Germany, whose heritage traces to 1260, when Duke Ludwig II 'the Severe' founded the first brewery of the Wittelsbach royal dynasty. The brewery at Geltendorf-Kaltenberg, near Munich, opened in 1871, and the brand's lineage runs through the Kingdom of Bavaria.
Prince Luitpold of the House of Wittelsbach established König Ludwig as a worldwide umbrella brand in 1975 and remains its proprietor. The name comes from one of Prince Luitpold's ancestors. The brand's slogan, 'Bier von königlicher Hoheit' (Beer of Royal Highness), reflects that Wittelsbach lineage directly.
König Ludwig specialises in several royal Bavarian beer styles, all brewed in strict accordance with the Bavarian Purity Law of 1516. Production follows traditional, conservative methods using original recipes handed down through the Wittelsbach family. In 2001, König Ludwig entered a 50/50 joint partnership with Warsteiner, and the beers are today produced by Warsteiner Brauerei Haus Cramer KG, based in Warstein, Germany.
The brand also offers an alcohol-free wheat beer, bringing Bavarian wheat beer tradition to sober-curious drinkers and those who prefer to avoid alcohol. König Ludwig has an established presence as an imported Bavarian beer across multiple markets and is stocked through a broad range of retail channels internationally.
