Square Root is a craft soda brand and soda brewery, founded in 2012 by brewer Ed Taylor and chemist Robyn Simms after they identified a gap in the market for interesting alcohol-free drinks.

Both founders are from the Midlands, and the business began in a home kitchen before launching at a farmers market in Harringay, North London. The brand established its Soda Works in Hackney in 2013, moved to Leyton in 2017, then to a Walthamstow production space in February 2019, and has since built a new home in Leicester. All production remains handmade by a small team.

Square Root applies a named-provenance standard to every ingredient it uses, drawing on fresh and seasonal produce from specific origins: lemons and grapefruits from Sicily, blood oranges from Italy, rhubarb from the Yorkshire rhubarb triangle, apples and pears from Kent, berry fruits from Herefordshire, ginger from China, and raspberry rhubarb from Tomlinson's Farm in Pudsey, West Yorkshire. The brand also buys direct from UK farmers.

Those standards carry through into production. The tonic base uses British beet sugar, fresh Sicilian lemon juice, and natural quinine; lemon rind is cooked in sugar syrup at a low temperature to extract its natural oils. For the non-alcoholic gin, Square Root uses distillation techniques borrowed from perfume-making rather than standard food production. The gin and tonic range came to market in January 2019. Square Root's first collaboration was with Pressure Drop Brewery.

The portfolio covers sodas and alcohol-free cocktail styles, and Square Root exports to France and Italy alongside its domestic sales.
